A name for quality

Cromtec is new brand name for chromite sand from LANXESS

Leverkusen -

With immediate effect, specialty chemicals company LANXESS will market its high-quality chromite sand worldwide under the new brand name Cromtec. The sand will also be available for a wider range of industrial applications. “Through integration of the supply chain from mine to end-user, all from a single supplier, LANXESS can provide high-quality chromite sand products of consistently high quality,” says Dr. Andreas Eickhoff, head of Strategic Marketing for Chrome at LANXESS. “The purpose of introducing the brand name Cromtec is to underscore this.”

Chromite from LANXESS, one of the world’s top producers of chrome ore for chemical applications, comes exclusively from the company’s own mine in Rustenburg, South Africa, and is noted above all for its low content of minor minerals. “Knowing exactly where our products come from means that consistency of quality is guaranteed – a very important factor for the foundry industry. With backwards integration through to the actual mining of the ore, customers are also ensured maximum reliability of supply,” explains Eickhoff.

Chromite sand is used among other applications as a raw material for the production of chrome chemicals and alloys such as ferrochrome. Because of its high heat resistance up to temperatures of 1,900 °C, its good thermal conductivity and its minimal thermal expansion, it is frequently used for mold-making in the foundry sector.
